Environmental review and regulatory approval ensuring projects comply with national law and international best practice.
Under the Environmental Protection and Management Act (2024) and the ESIA and Audit Regulations (2024), projects likely to affect the environment or communities must be assessed and licensed before they start.
Submit a project brief describing location, scale, activities and expected impacts.
The Ministry determines whether a full ESIA, a limited assessment or no assessment is required.
For full ESIAs, agree the terms of reference and hire a registered environmental expert.
Carry out the study, consult affected communities and prepare the Environmental and Social Management Plan.
The Ministry reviews the report and issues an approval, a conditional approval or a rejection.
Licensed projects are monitored and audited for compliance with their management plan.
Screening decides this. Large or high-risk projects (roads, ports, energy, mining, large farms) almost always need a full ESIA.
